Are you ready for a guided tour inside Benevento history? Yes!? Then be brave and hold on: the German students will lead us through the marvels of Benevento glorious past!!!

A legend said that the city was founded by the mythical Diomedes and was called Malevento ( bad wind or bad event). In 300 AD the territory was conquered by the Romans. After the war they called the city Benevento (good wind) to commemorate their victory.

In 268 the city became a Roman army colony because of the strategic location.

In 545 the walls of Benevento were destroyed by the Ostrogoths.

After Benevento had become the seat of the Langobardic dukes, it got into the dependence on the German and Frankish emperor again.

As a result of the Arabian conquest of southern Italy in the year 840, the dukedom was split in two territories. In 850 it was spilt in three territories (Benevento, Salerno und Capua).
In 1668 Benevento was completely destroyed by an earthquake. Archbishop Orsini (later Pope Benedikt XIII.) allowed to rebuild a big part of the city from his own money.
