A legend said that the city was founded by the mythical Diomedes
and was called Malevento ( bad wind or bad event). In 300 AD the territory
was conquered by the Romans. After the war they called the city Benevento
(good wind) to commemorate their victory.

In 545 the walls of Benevento were destroyed by the Ostrogoths. After Benevento had become the seat of the Langobardic dukes, it got
into the dependence on the German and Frankish emperor again. |

result of the Arabian conquest of southern Italy in the year 840, the dukedom
was split in two territories. In 850 it was spilt in three territories
(Benevento, Salerno und Capua). |

| In 1668 Benevento was completely destroyed by
an earthquake. Archbishop Orsini (later Pope Benedikt XIII.) allowed to
rebuild a big part of the city from his own money. |
