A survey on misconceptions regarding Spain and
the Spanish:
the German
results
|
As we did with Scottish
misconceptions, now we are showing the world a new survey about Spanish
misconceptions;
Bernd Zinsmeister, the coordinator of the "Agnes-Bernauer-Schule
Realschule für Mädchen" (the German
school participating to the Comenius BACK project), has just sent
the webmaster the results of the survey with his comments.
As Russell says: "Enjoy it!!!"

1st question
All Spanish people have a siesta after their afternoon meal.
Does anyone really know, how many Spanish people actually
have a siesta? Maybe this result comes close to reality...
|
|
2nd question
Spanish most popular alcoholic drink is…
- Wine 24%
- Beer 6%
- Sangria 70%
Here they go wrong. Obviously Bavarians think that beer
is only popular in their home country.
|
|
3rd question
Everybody in Spain can sing and dance flamenco
This result might be influenced by the students' knowledge about their
traditional music.
|
|
4th question
Spanish people drink a lot No comment!
|
|
5th question
Spanish get up very early in the morning and go to bed
very soon in the evening
It is hard to imagine that it should be the other way round. ;-))
|
|
6th question
The price
of houses in Spain is… This can only be a guess.
|
|
7th question
Spanish people
are great Europe supporters Here we can see how important is to promote the idea of "Europe". |
|
8th question
Spanish people
are…
- Arrogant and unfriendly 0%
- Friendly and hospitable 88%
- Easy-going and unreliable 0%
- Like people everywhere else 12%
I hope that this is not just being polite. |
|
9th question
Spanish people…
- are very proud of their customs and traditions 88%
- don't care about traditions 0%
- only concerned about having a good time 12%
Quite a clear statement, isn't it?
|
|
10th question
Most Spanish
poeople like…
- bullfighting 47%
- going out till early in the morning 53%
- drinking in the streets until very early in the morning 0%
I think this results the change in attitude among the younger generation.
|
|
11th question
Most Spanish
people have…
- Spanish made SEAT cars 41%
- German made cars 35%
- Don't have a car 24%
The students seem to have a high esteem of German cars.
("In fact I think all the Spanish drive Italian made
FIAT cars!" An Italian voice says... )
|
|
12th question
Alongside
with Germany and France…
- Spain is a third world country 12%
- A "second speed" European country 35%
- A highly developed European country 53%
What kind of ideas do they have about third world countries?
|
|
13th question
Most Spanish people are…
- Straightforward and open-minded 53%
- Retiring and not involved 0%
- The same as everywhere else 47%
Does this suggest, that "everywhere
else" people are not
open-minded?
|
|
14th question
As for their patriotic feelings, the Spanish are…
- Fiery, patriotic and would die for their country 76%
- Don't believe there is a Spanish nation 0%
- Are not bothered 24%
This corresponds with # 9. |
|
15th Question
Most Spanish young people are…
- Devout Catholics and go to church every weekend 30%
- Are not religious at all 70%
- Don't know what religion means 0%
Unfortunately there was no option for a way in the middle.

Thank
you Bernd! Now we know for sure that the idea of the Spanish as people
only devoted to flamenco and sangria is not shared by the Bavarian younger
generations. So let's keep on demolishing cultural misconceptions and
let's start building a new knowledge of European cultural identities. After
all, this is the main purpose of our Comenius BACK project, isn't it? |
